This year's, already the second in a row, Seminar on the energy use of biomass, biogas and waste - Biomass & biogas 2026 opened discussions on whether the energy that is found everywhere, i.e. that from forestry, agriculture and various residues and waste, can become a serious part of the Croatian energy system. The answer to this question is clear: it can and must. Namely, solutions for the energy use of biomass, biogas and waste are not new, but the way in which they are viewed today is significantly different from that of a few years ago. Accordingly, the seminar presented a number of examples of biomass use in the hospitality industry, industry and public buildings, from the boiler room in the Puntijarka Mountain Lodge, through the cogeneration plant in Đurđevac, to the plant in the Croatian Forests building in Gospić.

There were also discussions about the energy use of sludge and gases from wastewater treatment plants, which remains a huge challenge in Croatia. In addition, the Agro-Industrial Energy Park project in Čaporice near Trilj was presented, as well as experiences from Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The seminar was concluded with a round table entitled 'Biomass & Biogas in Practice – Where it Gets Stuck'. The discussion focused on problems in project implementation, from preparation and obtaining permits to connection to the electricity grid and the operation and maintenance of the plant itself, and proposals were made for removing bottlenecks.
